Broken Peeps In The Bible

Broken Peeps In The Bible

Every now and then I’ll hear a story of someone criticizing the Bible. They’ll say that it’s filled with all kinds of bad things – murder, slavery, rape, injustice, etc.

Well, of course it is. The Bible is a story about broken people, and God’s choice to love them anyway. The Bible is brutally honest about people, even the people we now look up to. King David was a great king. With a great lust problem. I wish I had the faith of Peter. I just wouldn’t want to be him when he sticks his foot in his mouth. God sent Jonah on a mission. Jonah literally ran in the opposite direction. I think the Bible makes it clear that broken people matter to God.

I am officially making every Thursday on this blog Broken People in The Bible Thursday. That name is not catchy at all so we will never speak of it again. Each Thursday I am going to pick a person from the Bible and explore why they were broken and how God used them to advance His Kingdom anyway. I have a lot of options, so I think I’ll just start from the beginning and work my way forward. So next week we’ll take a look at everyone’s favorite married couple – Adam and Eve!

I find it encouraging to know that God has a history of taking broken, imperfect people and allowing them to be part of His story. As we’ll see, some people jump at the chance to be used by God in their broken state; others do not. What makes David and Peter heroes today is that they were willing to admit their brokenness to God and humble themselves enough to be used by Him.

Who is your favorite broken person in the Bible? Why? Feel free to share!
